Málaga, next stop for ‘Próxima Estación Prevención del Ictus’

The María Zambrano railway station in Malaga will be the third stop of the ‘Próxima Estación Prevención del Ictus’ on the 27th and 28th of June, the campaign promoted by the Freno al Ictus, with the backing of the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) and the collaboration of the Bristol-Myers Squibb-Pfizer Alliance and the Fundación Alberto Contador.

The next ‘Próxima Estación Prevención del Ictus’ arrives in the capital of the Costa del Sol after its journey in the Bilbao station of Abando, where the action has achieved an important echo in the media, with a television presence in local (TeleBilbao), regional (EiTB) and national (TVE) channels, and a great coverage by online and printed publications.

Mar Freijó, head of the Ictu´s Unit of the Basurto Hospital, Alain Luna, head of the Ictu´s Unit of the Neurology Service of the Cruces Hospital and Julio Agredano, president of Freno al Ictus, were some of the personalities who presented and sponsored the initiative.

“We are very pleased with the outcome of the campaign. The objective was to bring the knowledge of the disease to the street and both by the attendance during these days to the stand and by the media coverage, I can qualify it as a success. Today there are more people in the Basque Country informed about risk factors and prevention and about the importance of time in detention and action. This is the first season of this campaign, the next one on June 27th in Malaga where we hope to have the same reception”, explains Agredano.

During its two days of activity, 412 tests were conducted to check heart rate and 22 possible cases of atrial fibrillation, one of the main risk factors, were detected. Ictus is a cerebrovascular disease that represents the first cause of death in women, the second in men and the main cause of severe disability in adult life in Spain. It is estimated that a total of 120,000 people are affected each year in Spain. Although 80% of ictus are preventable, it is estimated that every two seconds someone in the world may suffer from it.
