In the next decade, stroke cases in Spain will increase by 34%: “The clear message is that we must educate in health because it is the basis of prevention”

The forecast is frightening. And it also demands a response from institutions and society. The percentage was put on the table by Dr. Mar Castellanos, coordinator of the Cerebrovascular Disease Study Group (GEECV), during the informative conference “Scientific, Social and Institutional Meeting on stroke” that took place a month ago in the Congress of Deputies.

“The clear message is that we must educate in health because it is the basis of prevention,” said Dr. Castellanos, who also explained that in our country we must continue to implement stroke units where patients can be properly addressed, as they can reduce mortality by 25 percent.

The researcher, however, pointed out that there are still fewer of these units than necessary in Spain. And for this reason, one of the conclusions of this informative conference was the need to increase the number of stroke units in order to be able to attend to all those affected in this type of specialised department.

But many issues and approaches were addressed and a message of hope was also conveyed, as this is a highly preventable and treatable disease. The official summary of Freno al Ictus, a very interesting dossier to learn more about the ‘current social moment’ of stroke.
