Alberto Contador and Alejandro Díaz de la Peña honoured at the II Marcha BTT ‘Barcarrota con Alberto Contador’
About 300 bikers gathered this morning in the Extremadura town of Barcarrota where the local cycling club organized the II MTB Ride ‘Barcarrota with Alberto Contador’.
From the early hours of the day, athletes were arriving mainly from various parts of Extremadura and some from Portugal to the Plaza Francisca Sosa where the meeting point was located. The expectation was high to see in person the idol of Barcarrota descent, Alberto Contador Velasco, who had confirmed his attendance at the start of the race.
However, bib number 1 would go to another great local cyclist, Alejandro Díaz de la Peña López, who did take on the 65 kilometres of hard course through Barcarrota, Salvatierra de los Barros, Nogales and Salvaleón before returning to Barcarrota.
Alejandro had a chat with Alberto Contador after the lunch with almost all the participants, because everybody wanted a photo with the three times winner of the Tour.
