Alberto Contador Foundation receives the ‘Sustainability in Cycling’ recognition at the I Sostenibilidad, RSE y Deporte Awards
The I Sostenibilidad, RSE y Deporte Awards, held this Tuesday afternoon at the Hotel Ilunion Pio XII (Madrid), recognised companies and institutions that stand out for their commitment to sustainability, both environmental and social, always related to the world of sport. Specifically, in this first edition, special attention has been paid to one of the most relevant environmental problems for the coming years: energy storage.
In this first edition, the Fundación Alberto Contador has been recognised with the ‘Sustainability in Cycling’ award thanks to its sustainable project Bicis para la Vida by ŠKODA. The Alberto Contador Foundation is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to raise awareness of stroke, the disease suffered by Alberto, as well as to promote the use of bicycles as a sustainable means of transport and a healthy activity.
Among the various projects it develops is Bicis Para la Vida, which seeks to give a second life to used bicycles, thus reducing the amount of waste, which is beneficial to the environment. The repair and overhaul of the bikes is carried out by people with intellectual disabilities, which fosters their social inclusion and allows them to develop their skills and abilities. Finally, the delivery of these bicycles to people in a situation of social exclusion can improve their mobility, their autonomy and their quality of life, which contributes to their well-being, their social integration and the promotion of a sustainable means of transport.
The award was presented by José Luis Navarro, Chairman of Enresa, and was collected by Francisco Javier Contador, Director General of the Foundation.
The gala was attended by important figures from the world of sport such as Beatriz Álvarez, president of the F League; Theresa Zabell, Olympic sportswoman and president of the Ecomar Foundation; José Hidalgo, president of the ADESP (Spanish Sports Association); Gonzaga Escauriaza, president of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation; Jaime de Jaraíz, president and CEO of LG Spain and Portugal; Ramón Morcillo, president of the Spanish Padel Federation and Ernesto Aspe, Managing Director of Matrix, among others.
Fran Contador, who accepted the award on behalf of the Foundation: “Thank you very much to Patrocina un deportista and to all the sponsors who support these awards. At the Contador Foundation we are very grateful for these awards because they are an incentive to continue working on cycling; they are an incentive to continue going to schools to teach children that there is a way of getting around that is healthy and does not pollute; They are a stimulus to continue giving the possibility to people with functional diversity to practice a sport adapted to their conditions; they are a stimulus to continue taking recycled bikes to villages in the Moroccan High Atlas to give opportunities to its population and to continue bringing them to groups at risk of exclusion here in Spain. Thank you for this motivation and for giving us an incentive to continue working”.
