“I was worried when I tried to pick up the cup and my hand didn’t support me”
Angélica Pérez was one of the protagonists of a very complete report by journalist Esther Armora, from Barcelona, for ABC in which she addressed the reduction in age that has been detected in many cases of stroke, as well as the occurrence of cases with no possible margin of anticipation due to the collapse of the health system during many moments of the pandemic.
Pérez suffered a stroke in September 2020 after a few months under a lot of stress in her daily life. “It all happened very quickly. I got up to make a coffee and noticed a tingling in my hand, then I felt my vision start to be affected. I got worried when I tried to pick up the cup and my hand didn’t respond. I was just crying, but I couldn’t scream. I managed with great effort to get to my bed, stretched out with my mobile phone on me and saw that a friend was calling me. I don’t know how, but I was able to pick up the phone, and thanks to that I am still alive,” he recalled.
Dr. Jaime Masjuán, one of the experts consulted for this report, expressed his concern about the growing impact of this disease on an increasingly younger population. “Ten years ago, the incidence of stroke in patients of this age group was one in eight, now it has risen to one in six,” said Masjuan.
