Francisco Romero, new general manager of the social area at Fundación Alberto Contador

The Fundación Alberto Contador has strengthened its organisational structure with the appointment of Francisco Romero (1981) as the new general director of the social area, where he will work closely with both Alberto Contador and Francisco Javier Contador. With this appointment, the Foundation consolidates the work of projects such as Bicis para la Vida by ŠKODA or Idemticos and initiates new lines of work in its foundational objective of fighting against stroke.

Romero, who holds a degree in Business Administration and Management from the Carlos III University of Madrid and an ESADE postgraduate degree in Management and Administration of Non-Governmental Organisations, has been linked to the Contador Foundation for more than a decade. For five years, the Madrid native has been linked to the marketing and sponsorship department of the professional sports structures, initially in the continental category and since 2020 in the ProTeam category. Óscar Sánchez Pastrana, in a task that he has already been carrying out this season, takes charge of this area of the sports branch.

“I am very excited to take on this new position and to be able to lead the Foundation, I am looking forward to this new challenge and the opportunities that all this entails. I am grateful for the trust that both Fran and Alberto have placed in me, and I am committed to live up to expectations in order to contribute to the growth of the foundation and help it achieve its objectives,” Romero said. “I would also like to express my sincere thanks to all those who have supported and helped me during my time with the foundation’s sports teams since 2017. There are certainly times when I will miss being able to be with the teams, although I will always be linked directly or indirectly to them”.

“Since the creation of the Foundation in 2010, the sporting and social areas have not stopped developing, evolving and growing,” says Fran Contador, secretary of the Foundation that bears his brother Alberto’s name. “We have reached a point where a more autonomous structure is needed to accompany in the most efficient way all that this growth entails in order to continue helping more people through cycling and raising awareness of stroke as a pathology. We believe that Paco is the ideal person to take this helm because he is a local person, fully involved in the initiatives, who has been perfectly familiar with the projects in which he has played an important role since their inception. Paco is the ideal person to lead the current and future projects of the Fundación Contador”.

The Fundación Alberto Contador was created with the dual aim of promoting cycling and raising awareness of stroke in society, with the bicycle as one of the fundamental tools for raising awareness. Under its umbrella, different sporting and social projects have come to light, such as the cycling tour, initially itinerant and currently starting and finishing in Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort (2011), the U19 team (2012), the En Bici training action (2012), Bicis para la Vida (2012), the Plaza Eboli Cycling Academy (2013), the U23 team (2014), the professional team (2018) and the Idemticos initiative (2020).
